Smart City Limited has begun a survey to seek public inputs on the playgrounds in the city and to effect infrastructural changes in them
Based on the demand of residents for public playgrounds, authorities will mull on developing such projects
The survey, available on the Greater Chennai Corporation website, has been prepared by a consultant firm. It seeks details such as the time and money spent by an individual on sports, and the activities one is interested in. The survey aims to assess if there is a need for more infrastructure and will map areas from where more requests are made, an official said
The survey seeks feedback on the existing facilities: An individual's experience in the playgrounds, his/her take on the infrastructure and maintenance, and frequency of his/her visits
The corporation has 212 playgrounds in Chennai which could be developed into "world-class multi-sport facility with good maintenance and be reasonably priced", an official from parks and playgrounds department said. However, plans would materialize only if the survey yielded desired results, the official said
The aim of the survey is to see if people are willing to pay for good services. "The fee would help in providing coaching for particular sports and also help in maintenance," said an official
Earlier this year, the civic body had sanctioned the development of three multipurpose playgrounds - two in Semmachery and one in Mogappair. However, the project is yet to take off
A source in the civic body cited lack of funds for the projects not taking off
"The playgrounds in Semmanchery have been proposed years ago. Before even starting work on these playgrounds why is the corporation taking a survey for newer ones," asked Satish, a resident
